It seems to me the concept of privilege (white or otherwise) still serves to reinforce unjustifiable hierarchical ways of identifying with one another. Being aware of my/our white privilege often appears to have become the goal among many contemporary liberals instead of actually leveling the playing field. In other words, we are more focused on being woke than on actually changing the situation on the ground for people living in extreme poverty regardless of the pigment of their skin. Telling poor white people they enjoy privilege is the modern equivalent of telling poor white people that as bad as their circumstances may be at least they aren’t black. This used to be done to reinforce racist notions of racial superiority but now it is done to demonstrate how aware we are that’s how our society functions. Unfortunately, we still aren’t doing enough about it. When and how is this awareness finally going translate into truly raising all boats and creating a society that stops dividing people according to the color of their skin and starts evaluating them according to the content of their character?
