It’s more a moral call to action than a prediction. You may be right, no one will heed it and things will only continue to deteriorate. I have no crystal ball as to how all of this is going to play out. That said, A major American political party has collapsed at least once before, with the Republican Party rising to take its place. I think being open to the possibility — the collapse of a political party violates no laws, after all, be they written or physical— is necessary to finding our way out of this. If we deem positive change impossible, we risk our pessimism becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. A GOP that survives in its current form, or anything like it, is a death sentence to the Republic. It is simply unsustainable. Perhaps transformation of the party is “utopian” too, but what’s the alternative? Something has got to give.
