…mainly because they are trying to discover a moral paradigm in a universe that doesn’t contain one. Common sense would tell any reasonable individual that it is extremely unlikely that out there, somewhere in the bowels of the universe, there is a transcendental moral code waiting to be discovered by human reason.
It’s not necessary to turn to a transcendent source for something like human rights to be universal. I’ve taken the position that there is no such thing as an objective morality. However, I also argued that any social creature anywhere in the universe that has achieved a certain minimum level of intelligence will necessarily also be a highly cooperative species whose wellbeing rests upon the same or very similar behaviors that support our own happiness and wellbeing.
