My wife and I have extensive experience with single-payer, having lived in Canada for the last seven years. Our temporary return to the US has only served as an unpleasant reminder of just how screwed up the system still is here. I recently described my take on the current state of affairs. Basically, I don’t really see the US as offering true insurance at all, even under the ACA. High deductible plans enable companies and the government to argue they have delivered insurance while continuing to require most patients to pay most/all of the annual bill.
