This article represents everything that is wrong and frankly illiberal about identity politics. Identity politics claims to value diversity when in fact it argues for conformity by arguing that there’s a particular way to be gay, straight, black, white, brown, etc. If our individual or collective stories or our approach to dealing with a particular set of challenges doesn’t fit the correct mold identity politics has poured for us, whatever that may be, well then we are suspect. In Pete’s case this apparently means he is “covering”. True liberalism is about universal rights and protection under the law, not forcing people into our own preconceived silos of what it means to be a good (fill in the blank). It means supporting a society where people can work out their own individual and group identities for themselves without being shamed by so-called liberals forcing their own stereotypes down our throats or threatened by white supremacists and homophobes (the original champions of identity). Our shared humanity is all that really matters. I am sorry if you can’t get over the fact that for whatever reason Buttigieg’s experience and struggles don’t conform to what you think they should be but I have news for you, neither do the stories of probably 99% of the rest of humanity.
